GUIDED TOUR OF SESTO AL REGHENA

Visit the Abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis
WHAT SHOULD YOU CERTAINLY VISIT IN  SESTO AL REGINA?

Sesto al Reghena is a small village in the province of Pordenone with a name that has its origins in Roman times. Sesto comes from the six Roman miles in which the village is situated between the major Roman city of Iulia Concordia (Veneto) and the old road to Austria. Reghena is the name of the river that runs through it.

The attraction of this village is the wonderful eleventh-century Abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis famous for its many colorful frescoes dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.

THE ABBEY OF SANTA MARIA IN SYLVIS

The attraction of this village is the wonderful 11th century Abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis. Built on a spot where there used to be an 8th century Benedictine monastery founded by three brothers of Lombard origins. The foundations of this monastery are still visible.

In the 10th century, the monastery was completely destroyed by the cruel invasions of the Hungarians. The current Abbey was built around the year 1050. Once the Abbey had as many as seven different towers of which only one is still standing. In the courtyard you can see the old clock tower, the old chancery and the residence of the monks (now the Town Hall).

FRESCOES OF THE PUPILS OF GIOTTO

What makes a visit here so special? For sure the many 14th and 15th century frescoes inside the Abbey, of which the oldest ones were created by pupils of the famous Italian painter Giotto. Inside the apse of the church you see a very rare "Lignum Vitae" - "Tree of Life". There are only three of them in the entire region.

THE URN OF SANT'ANASTASIA

In the crypt you can see another rare relic from even earlier times. The Urn of Sant'Anastasia which is stored in a marble block carved with images from the Lombard period (eighth century), it probably once served as a marble lectern.

THE LAPIDARY MUSEUM

Within the abbey is also a small museum where you can view the 'Lapidaria' (pieces of stone with inscriptions)from bygone days.
