The different wine areas of
Friuli Venezia Giulia

FRIULI IS HEAVEN FOR WHITE WINE LOVERS BUT NOT ONLY!

The region Friuli Venezia Giulia produces excellent wines. Especially white wines.  It's heaven for white wine lovers!

This northeastern corner of Italy is almost the most important white wine producer, covering 20.000 ha of vineyards where 76% of white wines are produced. It has the highest proportion of white wines of any region except for the neighbouring region Veneto.

A LARGE VARIETY OF LOCAL WINES AND NOT ONLY

The main international white grape varieties are: Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon  as for the local wines the increasingly appreciated wines such as: Friulano, Malvasia and Ribolla Gialla.

The main international red wines are: Merlot, Cabernet but also the typical local wines such as Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso, Schioppettino and Terrano.

ALREADY THE ROMANS PRODUCED WINE HERE

The wines of this area have been appreciated since centuries. The tradition goes as far back as to the Roman Empire period. It is said that Livia, the wife of Emperor Augustus, owed her respectable age by drinking each day a glas of 'Pucinum'. Which might be the nowadays  'Terrano' a red wine produced in the wine region 'Carso', where the roots of the grapevines manage to work their way through the rugged karst rock.

WHAT MAKES THE WINES SO SPECIAL

More than half of the region consists of wine regions. In total there are eight wine areas. Each area is unique because of the diversity of soil (pebbles, sandstone, marl, earth, clay, and karst rock) or location (flat land, hilly areas, close to the sea, near a river). The most common areas are Collio and the adjacent Colli Orientali. This hilly area has a real micro-climate that benefits from many hours of sunshine, mild temperatures arriving from the Gulf of Trieste and cool winds arriving from the Alps.

RENT A YELLOW VESPA OR MOUNTAIN (E)-BIKE AND GO FOR A RIDE!

For several years now, driving through this beautiful area has become even more fun. Several wineries offer the option to rent a bright yellow 'vespa' - the typical Italian scooter or e-bike. The yellow represents the color of the sun, energy, and of course their wines. You can also go directly to the official rental service Zorgniotti. They are located in Via Vino della Pace, 18 in Cormòns.

On the most spectacular sites alongside the route, have been placed yellow picknick tables to promote the marketing campaign "Collio Brda Welcome". Brda is the name of the Slovenian wine area just across the border. The ideal spot for a drink or snack or just to enjoy the breathtaking view!

CORMÒNS THE HABSBURG PEARL IN THE COLLIO REGION

In the midst of the rolling countryside, you will find the town of Cormòns - a Habsburg gemstone in the heart of the Collio. Once this town was part of the Habsburg Empire, just like Gorizia and Trieste.

If you haven't had the chance to visit the wineries, go directly to the local wine shop "Enoteca di Cormòns" at Piazza XXIV Maggio number 21. Here you will find the best local DOC wines of the Collio and Isonzo area.
